Hosted by the Onward!, di Rosa’s Young Collectors Group, this fun-packed event encourages families to dive in and get creative! Art stations with instructors from Nimbus Arts will be scattered around the inspiring di Rosa galleries and grounds. Live music by Napa’s own Comfort Slacks on the courtyard lawn—dancing encouraged! Hula Hooping demos and performances by Sunglow Hoop Dance. Lunches will be available for purchase at Marks the Spot fine food truck. Entering the Wild

Entering the Wild features the work of five California artists who share a reverence for the natural world, and specifically for the animal kingdom. Each artist engages the viewer in a conversation about mankind’s relationship to nature and the possibilities of developing a deeper relationship with and understanding of our wild neighbors. On view are sculptures and drawings by Jane Rosen, black and white photography by Lukas Felzmann and Richard Whittaker, photographic and video installations by Trish Carney, and mixed media installations by Adriane Colburn. Artist Talk: Stephanie Syjuco

KQED and di Rosa come together again to present educational programs with artists from the di Rosa collection who have also been featured on KQED’s popular art series, Spark. Stephanie Syjuco works primarily in sculpture and installation using ideas of bootlegging, counterfeiting and re-appropriation to address issues of cultural biography and economic power structures. Born in the Philippines, Syjuco received her MFA from Stanford University and BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She currently teaches at Stanford University and the California College of the Arts, San Francisco.

Annual Members Picnic

Galleries are open with interactive projects while guests spend the day exploring the grounds and enjoying a picnic lunch. Live music will be playing in the Olive Grove. Beer and water are provided. Save the Date! di Rosa’s Annual Art Auction is well-known for featuring world class art from regional artists such as James Melchert, Sandow Birk, Deborah Oropallo, William Wiley, Judy Dater, Christopher Brown, and Viola Frey. The party starts with a scrumptious meal and live entertainment, followed by live and silent auctions and a groovy afterparty. Proceeds benefit exhibitions and educational programs year round at di Rosa.

CYCLE: New Works by Hung Liu Opening Reception

Di Rosa began its 2012 exhibition season with the opening of CYCLE: New Works by Hung Liu. The work in this exhibit dates from the past five years, including art not previously exhibited, or seen in the Bay Area. Since 2003 Hung Liu has been working with master printer David Salgado at Trillium Graphics. Liu’s colleagues and students from Mills College in Oakland enjoyed food prepared by Winery Chefs and wine from the Hess Collection on a beautiful Saturday evening.

Auction X: Artistic License Annual Benefit Art Auction

Berets and bongos were everywhere at di Rosa’s beatnik-inspired 10th Annual Benefit Art Auction. The crazy scene began in the Main Gallery with a jaw-dropping performance by Conspiracy of Beards and a superb dinner accompanied by the sounds of The Real Jazz Trio. The event moved to the tented courtyard with a parade of go-go dancers and drummers from Cosmos Percussion Orchestra. Auctioneer Greg Quiroga ordered bidders “Don’t be square. Put your paddles in the air” for live lots including some of the 45 works donated by notable Bay Area artists. Spirited bidding in the Silent Auction led to dancing to the lounge sounds of Project Pimento. A groovy time was had by all the hepcats.

CYCLE 輪回: New Works by Hung Liu

As a painter, Hung Liu challenges the documentary authority of historical Chinese photographs by subjecting them to the more reflective process of painting. Much of the meaning of Liu’s painting comes from the way the washes and drips dissolve the documentary images, suggesting the passage of memory into history, while working to uncover the cultural and personal narratives fixed–but often concealed–in the photographic instant. She has written: “I want to both preserve and destroy the image.”

The work in this exhibit dates from the past five years, including art not previously exhibited, or seen in the Bay Area. Since 2003 Hung Liu has been working with master printer David Salgado at Trillium Press on a body of dense, mixed media pieces where original images are reworked, layered and combined behind sheets of resin. Liu states, “I cannot get close to my history, but I cannot get rid of it. I’m carrying my past into the future.”

Hung Liu was born in Changchun, China in 1948, and grew up under the Maoist regime. She studied mural painting as a graduate student at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, before immigrating to the US in 1984 to attend UC San Diego. A two-time recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in painting, Liu also received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Printmaking from the Southern Graphics Council International in 2011. Liu’s works have been exhibited extensively and collected by the SFMOMA and Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Los Angeles County Museum, among others. Liu currently lives in Oakland, California, where she has been a professor of art at Mills College since 1990.
