Join us in the Gatehouse Gallery for the opening of the exhibition CYCLE 輪回: New Works by Hung Liu. Hung Liu is widely known and admired for her large oil paintings and prints which incorporate powerful imagery and masterful handling of materials to depict personal, social, and political themes. Come view new mixed media works fresh from her studio and enjoy local wines with a mix of art lovers. Members Preview: 5:00-6:00 PM; General Public: 6:00-8:00 PM. Admission is free.

Artist Talk: Hung Liu

Hung Liu was born in Changchun, China in 1948, and grew up under the Maoist regime. She studied mural painting as a graduate student at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, before immigrating to the US in 1984 to attend UC San Diego. A two-time recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in painting, Liu also received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Printmaking from the Southern Graphics Council International in 2011. Di Rosa’s New Work series offers the public an opportunity to encounter new and recent works by important Bay Area artists. As a painter, Hung Liu challenges the documentary authority of historical Chinese photographs by subjecting them to a more reflective process of painting. Much of the meaning of her painting comes from the way the washes and drips dissolve the documentary images, suggesting the passage of memory into history, while working to uncover the cultural and personal narratives fixed–but often concealed–in the photographic instant. This year di Rosa’s Spring Nature Hikes are offered in April 28, May 5, June 9, and June 16 beginning at 10:00AM. Join experienced guides for the exclusive opportunity to hike to the top of Milliken Peak at di Rosa, the highest summit in the Carneros region of Napa Valley with sweeping views of the North Bay, including vistas of the Napa River and San Pablo Bay. The hikes are moderately strenuous, children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Hikes are free to members, all others $15. Auction X: Artistic License

Berets and bongos were everywhere at di Rosa’s beatnik-inspired 10th Annual Benefit Art Auction. The crazy scene began in the Main Gallery with a jaw-dropping performance by Conspiracy of Beards and a superb dinner accompanied by the sounds of The Real Jazz Trio. The event moved to the tented courtyard with a parade of go-go dancers and drummers from Cosmos Percussion Orchestra. Auctioneer Greg Quiroga ordered bidders “Don’t be square. Put your paddles in the air” for live lots including some of the 45 works donated by notable Bay Area artists. Spirited bidding in the Silent Auction led to dancing to the lounge sounds of Project Pimento. A groovy time was had by all the hepcats.

Looking at You Looking at Me

This exhibition asks visitors to reconsider the relationship between viewing and being viewed. Looking at You Looking at Me features photography, video, sculpture, painting, and electronic constructions selected from the di Rosa collection by curator Robert Wuilfe. Wuilfe brings together an intriguing group of artworks that provoke a conversation about the ways we look at each other, the implications of being the subject of a gaze, and the role of art in this complex interplay. Artists include Robert Arneson, Anthony Aziz, Leon Borensztein, Bruce Cannon, Carter, Van Deren Coke, Marque Cornblatt, Judy Dater, Viola Frey, Jack Fulton, Michael Garlington, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Larry Jordan, leonardogillesfleur, Judy Malloy, Alan Rath, Rigo 23, and Michael Stevens.

Looking at You Looking at Me reflects a clear thread in the di Rosa collection of artwork that engages directly with the viewer and social situations, sometimes in challenging ways. Select works, such as photographs by Lynn Hershman Leeson, and Judy Dater gaze back at the viewer in ways that provoke a reevaluation of preconceived assumptions about identity. Artists such as Rigo 23 and Anthony Aziz combine the visual and the textual to force a new look at historical, corporate, and political structures. Others, such as Carter and leonardogillesfleur utilize conceptually intricate visual staging to bridge the space between the viewer and the subject. Electronic works by Alan Rath and Bruce Cannon reveal uncanny and unsettling perspectives on surveillance, empathy, and the autonomy of technology.

Onward! Young Collectors group hosted another great evening of forward thinking food, wine, art and fun. With eats by Le Truc and Kingdom Cake, wines by ZD Wines, Blue Plate and Picayune, coffee by Yo el Rey Roasting and an amazing musical performance by Deluna. Competition was fierce in the scavenger hunt that asked teams to identify collection artists, draw self-portraits and transform into zombies. Artists Porous Walker, David Hopp, and Dan Graham aided people in burying their fears and setting free their dreams. A full moon capped off the night.
