In Conversation: Peter Saul

Gatehouse Gallery
Saul_SF_RedPlane-FB

Peter Saul, View of SF / Red Plane, 1985. Acrylic and oil on canvas, 67 x 109 in. di Rosa collection, Napa.

Peter Saul’s lush and masterfully rendered paintings have been admired and derided far and wide for more than 50 years. A San Francisco native, Peter Saul (b. 1934) has charted his own candy-colored course from California to Paris to Austin to New York, exploring sex, money, politics, self-loathing, food, war, death, and many combinations therein.
Join us for this rare opportunity as Saul returns to the Bay Area to discuss his work and lively style in conversation with Jordan Stein, co-curator of the current exhibition, Relax in Electric Chair: Peter Saul at di Rosa. Following the talk, those in attendance are invited to stay for the Members’ Preview of Tongue-in-Cheek, starting at 5 PM.
$10 General / $5 Members. Tickets are limited and subject to availability; click here to purchase. Spread the word: join and share the event on Facebook.

This exhibition explores the continuing legacy of humor and absurdity in Bay Area art through the lens of a new generation of artists. In an increasingly fraught social and political context—both locally and abroad—many artists have turned to comedy to reflect upon and illuminate the absurdities of daily life. Tongue-in-Cheek presents a selection of these works in painting, photography, sculpture, video, text, and performance by artists Tammy Rae Carland, Jonn Herschend, Bessma Khalaf, Jennie Ottinger, Kate Rhoades, Chris Sollars, Lindsey White, and Wonderment Consortium. Known for its oft irreverent collection, di Rosa provides an apt context to examine this powerful approach to art making that favors laughter as a critical tool.
Free. Members Preview 5-6 PM.

Pétanque with Paul Kos and Curators’ Walkthrough

Zizi_Va

Paul Kos, Zizi Va (detail), 1994. Wood, steel, glass, and pétanque balls, 105 x 40 x 12.5 in. Gift of Gregory and Jennifer Kos. di Rosa Collection, Napa

Join curator Amy Owen and guest curator Tanya Zimbardo for a walkthrough of Equilibrium: A Paul Kos Survey followed by an opportunity to cheer on Paul Kos and special guests as they activate his site-specific installation, Zizi Va (1994), through the game of pétanque.
Since the 1990s Kos has brought pétanque into various exhibition contexts and as public commissions. Also known as Boules, pétanque is an outdoor game that originated in France and is similar to bocce. Kos’s Zizi Va, recently restored in anticipation of the artist’s survey, consists of two pétanque courts and a wooden cabinet housing a sculptural installation with the male version of Marcel Duchamp’s Étant donnés, viewable through a small peephole.
Located adjacent to the pétanque courts, Kos’s installation Tunnel/Chapel (1997, with Isabelle Sorrell), the artist’s video masterpiece Chartres Bleu (1982-86), and di Rosa’s Main Gallery will also be on view during the event.
Event Schedule:
4 PM: Curators’ walkthrough
5 PM: Pétanque spectating and refreshments
Transportation to the pétanque courts departs at 4:45 PM.
Beer, wine, and snacks will be provided.
