Jim Melchert was born in 1930 in New Bremen, Ohio. Melchert earned a BA from Princeton University, an MFA from University of Chicago, and an MA from UC Berkeley. His work is held in numerous collections, including the SFMOMA, the Oakland Museum of California, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Baltimore Art Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum
