Initiated in 2014, this collaboration marks the launch of a newly revitalized Artist in Residence program at Stags’ Leap Winery through a multi-year partnership with di Rosa.
Stags’ Leap Winery has been a gathering place and creative retreat for artists from all over the country since its inception in 1893. With the revival of their Artist in Residence program, the winery seeks to pay tribute to its iconic location and focus solely on artists currently living in, or hailing from Northern California. This focus reinforces di Rosa’s long history of supporting and celebrating regional artists. Through the joint residency, Stags’ Leap Winery provides resources and a distinguished living space for artists to research site-specific projects in Napa Valley while di Rosa provides a public exhibition to showcase the artists’ work following their residency.
British-born, San Francisco-based artist Richard T. Walker was the first artist to participate in the Artist in Residence program. Walker resided at the winery’s Napa property in the winter of 2014 while developing the work seen in his solo exhibition at di Rosa, the fallibility of intent (February 7–April 26, 2015).
Join us at 500 First Street in Napa (formerly the Copia building) for a public screening of selections from di Rosa’s film collection curated by Beatnik Meteors artist and filmmaker Paul Clipson. Featuring works by William T. Wiley, Bruce Conner, and others, followed by a special screening of outtakes from Clipson’s current body of work with live improvisational sound accompaniment by Joshua Churchill.

This solo exhibition presents new work by noted contemporary artist Desirée Holman. Through a range of media, Holman explores the overlap of science fiction and New Age mysticism and the iconography associated with these realms—including aliens, auras, and time travelers—to examine the space where fantasy can reveal truth. Sophont in Action emerges from Holman’s long-standing interest in the communal uses of technology for creative, spiritual, and social fulfillment. Oscillating between terrestrial and extraterrestrial, and new and old ages, Holman’s current body of work speaks largely to our culturally developed conceptions of “otherness” and the shaping of identity within an evolving world. read more

di Rosa is honored to be one of 15 Bay Area visual arts organizations selected to participate in YBCA’s signature triennial Bay Area Now 7 (July 18–October 5, 2014). Using an art fair style format in which the selected participants present curated projects in a shared exhibition space, BAN7 celebrates visual arts organizations as vital players in the local arts ecology. The exhibition aims to foster increased appreciation for Bay Area art, artists, and organizers, and to promote a greater understanding of the vast range of practices and individual visions that make the Bay Area such a vibrant center for contemporary art.
For this exhibition, di Rosa commissioned San Francisco-based artist and filmmaker Floris Schönfeld to create an alternative creation myth of the di Rosa site in the format of a live action role-playing (LARP) game. Schönfeld collaborated with a local LARP group to integrate di Rosa’s site and collection into the narrative and logic of their existing game, Sanguine Dreams, a vampire chronicle set in 1980s Sonoma County. The game was played throughout di Rosa’s 217-acre property over three nocturnal gaming sessions in the spring of 2014. The project manifests as a multi-part installation including documentation shot during the gaming period, seminal artifacts from the resulting story, and a narrative video discussing the rules of the game.
Join us at YBCA to see Schönfeld’s installation, Sanguine Dreams at di Rosa, and celebrate the opening of this exciting exhibition. Enjoy cocktails and lively entertainment, and meet and mingle with some of the Bay Area’s finest contemporary artists.
Held offsite at YBCA: 701 Mission Street (at 3rd Street), San Francisco. $12 advance / $15 at door. Click here for more information.
